Tension in Venezuela is on the rise again as the opposition and the government accuse each other of trying to stage a coup. There has been a wave of anti-government protests and dozens of people have been killed in protest-related violence since April. Here, we look more in depth at the problems facing Venezuela and its president, Nicolas Maduro.-------------------------- The antigovernment protests in Venezuela, created a situation of violence and people killed since April. The French President Macron addressed a statement to condemn these violences. “France deplored the situation in Venezuela and condemned the violence, which had worsened in the last few days and again had many victims. The arrest of Leopoldo Lopez and Antonio Ledezma on Tuesday 1 August is a very negative signal in this respect. It marks a new stage in the confrontation and is not likely to facilitate the restoration of confidence.“ The French President recalls the concern of other European Countries “Our European partners share these concerns, which were expressed by the High Representative, Ms Mogherini. Together we call for de-escalation, respect for human rights, the rule of law and fundamental freedoms. We look forward to a return to normal functioning of the institutions as soon as possible.“------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE EUROPEAN UNION AND ITS MEMBER STATES REGRETS THE VENEZUELAN DECISION TO GO AHEAD WITH ELECTING CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY “The European Union and its Member States deeply regret the decision of the Venezuelan authorities to go ahead with the election of a Constituent Assembly on 30 July. The European Union and its Member States also welcome and encourage the offers of countries in the region and other international actors to accompany and facilitate such negotiations. They are ready to actively support all efforts towards this objective.“ The High Representative of Union European, Frederica Mogherini declared, about the situation in Venezuela. “France, in consultation with its European partners and in support of the efforts of the countries of the region, will continue to support any mediation that would allow the resumption of a credible, sincere and serious dialogue between the government and the opposition and end To the spiral of violence. Our Ambassador, on the spot, keeps in touch with all parties. The only possible way out of the crisis, is dialogue, in fact, that it is going through, and of which the Venezuelan people is the first victim.“ President Macron concluded.
